After initial development, Mayo Clinic tested the Well-Being Index in a number of professions and job types and evaluated its ability to predict a variety of different occupational and personal outcomes. The results from these studies—which included more than 25,000 individuals—were then published in a series of peer-reviewed journal publications.
For more information on how the Well-Being Index accurately measures 6 dimensions of distress and well-being in 9 questions, we recommend you read this article (Ability of a 9-Item Well-Being Index to Identify Distress and Stratify Quality of Life in US Workers) published by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
In working with over 800 organizations around the world, we’ve discovered many ways to maximize participation. The Well-Being Index allows users to print or download a certificate of completion (containing no personal information other than the participant’s name) which can be used in a wide variety of incentive-based programs. Allow those who sign up to enter into a raffle, hold an organization-wide competition for which department can get the highest participation percentage, or include the Well-Being Index as part of your continued medical education curriculum. There are a plethora of ways to promote engagement and get the most out of the tool.

Absolutely. Organizations that license the Well-Being Index have the ability to add custom demographic questions for users to fill out when signing up. You can easily add a question such as, “Which location do you primarily practice at?” We can then generate well-being reports to include “mean score by location” for your organization. This is just one example of how the Well-Being Index reports can be configured to meet your needs.
A participant's score is compared to normative data from published national samples specific to the assessment version. In addition to this comparative data, the national benchmarks are updated consistently based on ongoing data compiled from Well-Being Index participants.
Once enough assessments at your organization have been collected, participants will also be able to see how their well-being scores compare to their peers' by specialty.
